Mayor Maria Romano Marcinko was born and raised in Steelton, as was her father, Joseph Romano, and his family and her mother Frances Rudman, and her family. She is of Croatian-Italian descent. She is Steelton’s first female Mayor.

She graduated from Steelton Highspire High School, attended Harrisburg Area Community College and Lebanon Valley College. She is a graduate of the Governor’s Leadership Development Institute for Women in State Government and the Pennsylvania State Police Academy.

Maria enjoyed a 35 year career with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, all in law enforcement agencies, in both law enforcement officer positions and/or Human Resource Management. She retired as the Director, Personnel Division, Pennsylvania Board of Probation & Parole.

Having a desire for public service at a young age, Maria, joined the Steelton Fire Department, and became a certified Emergency Medical Technician. Another first for Maria, as she was the first female member accepted into the Steelton Fire Department and Steelton Ambulance Association.

She has been a member of Steelton Borough Council since September 2008 and Vice President since 2014. As a member of Council, she founded a non-profit organization, Steelton Community Cats, to help the Borough save money in its Police Budget.

Maria is a member of many community organizations such as the St. Lawrence Croatian Lodge #13; Steelton Italian Club, where she was Recording Secretary for many years; American Legion Post #420, the Bressler Club, and the Sons of Italy. She is a member of Prince of Peace, Roman Catholic Parish, Steelton.

Maria works part time as a travel escort and enjoys talking about Steelton in her travels where she definitely has learned this is a small, small world. There isn’t any place she goes that someone hasn’t heard of Steelton!

As Mayor, Maria hopes to listen to the community to understand each and everyone’s needs and work with the Council to realize these needs while being fiscally and morally responsible. She is not naive that Steelton today is not the Steelton of the past. It is important to her that the new Steeltonian learn the values and history of our community while integrating new methods and cultures at the same time.

One things she does promise is that she is always available to anyone, and would love to hear from you directly. She plans to be visible in the community and hopes that if you are having an issue, you call her directly at 717-439-3390 and she will work to get the problem resolved.
