PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE: PROHIBITION AGAINST RESERVING PUBLIC PARKING SPACES
To the Residents of Steelton Borough:
The Steelton Borough Police Department reminds residents that placing objects in public streets to reserve or save parking spaces is prohibited under Borough ordinance.
We understand parking can be challenging, especially in residential neighborhoods where spaces are limited. However, public streets and parking spaces are intended for everyone’s use and cannot be privately reserved by placing lawn chairs, traffic cones, trash cans, buckets, furniture, or other objects in the roadway.
Applicable Borough Ordinance
Under Steelton Borough Code, Chapter 94 (Streets and Sidewalks), Article III (Obstructions), § 94-20, placing, leaving, or maintaining objects that obstruct or interfere with the normal public use of streets and sidewalks is prohibited.
Additionally, § 94-21 establishes penalties for violations of these provisions.
Residents are reminded that public parking spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis unless otherwise designated by law. No individual has the authority to claim or reserve a public parking space by placing personal property or other obstructions in the roadway.
Enforcement and Compliance
The Steelton Borough Police Department encourages residents to voluntarily comply with these regulations. Objects used to improperly reserve public parking spaces may be subject to enforcement action, including citations and applicable penalties, in accordance with Borough ordinances.
Our objective is not simply enforcement, but to promote fairness, accessibility, and safety throughout our community.
A Message to Our Community
We recognize that finding convenient parking near your residence can sometimes be frustrating. However, public parking is just that—public. No resident has a greater claim to an otherwise unrestricted public parking space simply because it is located in front of their home or because they previously occupied it.
We ask all residents to demonstrate courtesy, patience, and consideration for their neighbors. Reserving parking spaces with personal belongings not only violates Borough regulations but can also create unnecessary disagreements and safety concerns within our neighborhoods.
Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and continued commitment to making Steelton Borough a better place to live.
