Steelton Faces Tough Choices in 2026 Budget
Steelton Borough Council is exploring all options in an effort to close a $400,000 budget deficit, including the possibility of a 10% increase in property taxes. A final vote on the budget is scheduled for the public meeting on December 29th.
The challenge comes as wages for police, public works and administration staff are scheduled to increase by 3%, which is less than the rate of inflation. However, property tax revenues are flat. This means that income is not keeping pace with expenses.
In order to balance the budget, the borough either needs to cut jobs from its already-slim work force or raise taxes.
